Abstrakt

This is a sociolinguistic study of conversation in German between Japanese and Germans living in Germany, with a focus on repairs initiated by nonnative speakers. The aim is to analyse nonnative speaker-initiated repair, and through it investigate how participants achieve mutual understandings and what their thoughts are while designing these repairs. The center of this research is a detailed analysis of audio data based on the methods of conversation analysis. Additional analysis on data from follow-up interviews with the participants was also done.
Although conversations in a contact situation (i.e. conversations between native speakers and nonnative speakers) have different features from conversations between native speakers, the mechanism of repair in both situations is fundamentally the same. However, there are also some phenomena unique to a contact situation, which may be due to restricted linguistic knowledge of nonnative speakers, difference in the degree or manner of politeness between the participants, confidence or lack of confidence of Japanese participants about their knowledge of German, etc. Furthermore, some other phenomena are considered unique to the cultural backgrounds of the participants of this research (German and Japanese), due to such factors as how Germans see Japanese, the interference of a Japanese conversational style, etc.
Furthermore, mutual understanding and building “better relationships” between native and nonnative speakers can be achieved through whole sequences of nonnative speaker-initiated repair. At the same time, participants in a contact situation are aware of their own nativeness/non-nativeness to the language and there remain asymmetries between the participants. These two aspects are important in considering the attainment of good communications and the building of comfortable relationships between native and nonnative speakers.
