Beskrivelse

Low oxygen aquatic environments are abundant on Earth, but poorly studied. They are important, however, as oxygen levels regulate nitrogen cycle dynamics, and these dynamics control the availability of nitrogen for primary production in the oceans. The Bay of Bengal is the largest low-oxygen environment in the ocean. Indeed, it is poised at the point of becoming truly anoxic and thus a major sink for nitrogen in the oceans. This project will study the regulation of the nitrogen cycle under low-oxygen levels as exist in the Bay of Bengal. Our goal is first, to understand what combination of conditions would push the Bay of Bengal into becoming major a marine nitrogen sink, and second, to understand how the marine nitrogen cycle should respond to increasing ocean deoxygenation as is predicted in response to global warming.
