MESB will train a new generation of entrepreneurial and innovative ESRs with the ability to convert knowledge and ideas into products and services for economic and social benefit, able to face current and future challenges in the field of seagrass management and climate change mitigation needed in a carbon free society.

MESB provides scientific excellence and excellent transferable skills thus enhancing career perspectives in both the academic and nonacademic sectors through international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility combined with an innovation oriented mindset.

This will be accomplished through an excellent international consortium of approx. 9 academic and 7 non-academic partners that will collaborate to provide supervision, training and research activities from fundamental (basic) to applied research and development, equipping the ESRs with the skills and competences requested by the industry, academia and society. MESB will extend the traditional academic research training setting for ESRs by incorporating elements of open science, innovation and entrepreneurship. Thereby providing the right combination of research related and transferable skills acquired through international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectional mobility combined with an innovation orientated mindset. Each ESR hosted at an academic partner will have a secondment at a non-academic partner and vice versa. This will directly enhance the ESRs employability.


In MESB we will establish an interdisciplinary and intersectoral ITN of 11-14 international participants for the training of 12 ESRs to become the next generation European marine ecologist. The overall aim of MESB is to develop tools, techniques, applications and best practices to better understanding, predicting and managing seagrass ecosystems for healthy oceans under global / climate change. MESB addresses the following 5 objectives: 1) Develop specific and sensitive molecular markers for biological and environmental stress. 2) Develop a systems biology approach integrating multi’omics analyses. 3) Bridging next-generation molecular methodologies with ecological indicators and aerial sensor observations. 4) Provide predictive models for ecosystem health. 5) Restore seagrass ecosystems by providing site selection tools MESB is timely as seagrass ecosystems provide major ecosystem services such as mitigating climate change, protecting coasts from storms & sea level rise and nursing global fish stocks. At the present we loose seagrass ecosystems and in consequence their ecosystem services at accelerated rates of 7% per year and without understanding the reasons. In particular the effects of environmental pressure on molecular level is largely unknown, but crucial to understand the underlying mechanisms of declining seagrass populations world wide. Novel molecular techniques like epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics provide a powerful tool to understand an organism’s response to the environment. These techniques combined with more conservative ecological indicators (already used today) and drone based sampling and mapping will allow for a holistic understanding of seagrass ecosystems and prediction models on global scale. Tools desperately needed by national, European and International initiatives and agencies (i.e. IPCC, EPAs, UNEP).
