Background: Pregnancy is a major life event and can pose challenges for many women in terms of being able to maintain full-time employment in its original form. Therefore, absence among pregnant women is significant, which leads to high costs for both society and the individual. According to a survey by the Ministry of Employment in 2010, two-thirds of all pregnant women reported absence during pregnancy, and about one-third were absent for more than four weeks in addition to their maternity leave. Thus, four projects were initiated in Denmark in 2020, including one in the Region of Southern Denmark, aiming to test and evaluate new methods for improving the working environment for pregnant women, reducing their pregnancy-related absence, and increasing their opportunities to remain in employment for as long as possible during pregnancy. In addition, the project aimed to improve the workplace's skills in handling issues among pregnant employees.
Methods: The project in the Region of Southern Denmark was organized as a collaboration between workplaces, the occupational medical clinics at Odense University Hospital and Grindsted Hopsital, and the four maternity wards in the Region of Southern Denmark (Odense/Svendborg, Aabenraa, Kolding, and Esbjerg). The project consisted of a daily project management and four occupational health midwifes one from each maternity ward with a 50% employment in the project who organized and carried out visits at the workplaces among the pregnant women and their employer.
Results: Overall, the project was a success. Almost 250 pregnant women, their employers, and workplaces participated, and the evaluations from all parties was overwhelmingly positive. In addition, it appeared that the project contributed to a reduction in prolonged pregnancy-related absence, as well as it increased confidence in combining work and pregnancy among both the pregnant women and their employers. Furthermore, participation improved the communication between the pregnant woman and her employer.
