Mankind’s greatest achievements have come from the inner curiosity to know how the world works, leading to new ways of thinking and rapid progress in knowledge.

This project aims to find Nature’s next fundamental force by exploiting the synergy between theoretical insight and supercomputers’ numerical power.

Fundamental forces are described by complex quantum models known as gauge theories. All known fundamental forces, except Gravity, are described in a unified framework, named the Standard Model (SM). These forces are: Electromagnetism, governing chemistry and the majority of everyday physical phenomena, the Weak force, responsible for radioactivity and e.g. the burning of the Sun, and the Strong force, which binds atomic nuclei together. Despite its phenomenal success, there are many reasons to believe that the SM is incomplete. The missing pieces of the puzzle which is a complete description of Nature, are related to some of the most profound riddles in modern physics: Why do things have a mass? Why there is more matter than antimatter? What are the Dark matter and energy?

Many models exist which attempt to solve, at least in part, these problems and to describe the physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Since a long time, however, our understanding of new forces has been stuck because of the inability to solve analytically the models. Now, for the first time, we are able to complement our theoretical insight with reliable numerical “solution” of candidate models, leading to rapid and fundamental progress.

This project will have a huge impact among the physics community at large, including the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider and Dark Matter experiments. Deliverables will include the formation of a first-class eScience group at SDU, leader among the Scandinavian countries in large-scale simulations on GPU clusters.

This project will increase the excellence and competitiveness of Denmark in the world, as well as its internationalization.
