Improving Second Language Pedagogy at the Prosody-Pragmatics Interface using Human-Robot Interaction

This project addresses the teaching of prosody and pragmatics to second language learners. We analyze real conversations and identify prosodic and pragmatic features that are used by native speakers to fulfill certain communicative tasks.
Once we have identified a linguistic feature as a candidate for a trouble source, we use Human-Robot Interaction experiments to investigate communicative functions of that feature in a controllable way. The results are use to create novel teaching materials.
