Early phase development of healthcare product within the contexts of age-related issues and chronic diseases – An international multidisciplinary research network among Denmark, USA, and China

Projekter: ProjektForskning

Beskrivelse

Age-related issues and chronic diseases are becoming major challenges at a global scale and the related financial cost has created a substantial fiscal burden. There is a great necessity to develop more economical healthcare solutions to ensure the quality of care. Danish research institutions and industries have been pioneers in the field, designing and developing innovative and affordable healthcare products. Many of these products have been implemented in the Danish healthcare system to improve patients’ quality of life, work environments of healthcare professionals, and to ensure patients’ independence and privacy, e.g. the Patient@Home platform initiative and the Digital Welfare strategy. Deep understanding of the customers’ needs is significantly important for product development since it could both save time and reduce errors in the process. Despite the proven effectiveness of a product in one healthcare setting, it has been difficult for researchers and industry to implement their technologies in other settings. The US and China, for example, have unique healthcare systems and reimbursement policies that require healthcare products designed to match their unique needs and environment. Thereby, researchers from US and China, who have complementary competences on user-centered design, Chinese innovation policy, healthcare technology assessment, and knowledge management, are invited to a workshop at SDU. The scientific focus is early phase healthcare product development for age-related issues and chronic diseases, and knowledge sharing and transfer across borders.
