Background
Since 2017, the United Nations (UN) has experienced a significant increase in the volume and complexity of work related to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) within their uniformed personnel deployed to UN peace operations. PTSD has severe consequences for the daily life of not only the uniformed person experiencing PTSD but the entire family, colleagues, friends and other relatives.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is:
- To investigate the probability of developing PTSD for the UN uniformed personnel, the average duration from repatriation to recognition of PTSD and compensation claims, current practices by member states in assessment and processing of PTSD claims and best practices for prevention of PTSD.
- To enable the UN to enhance its knowledge of the complex and comprehensive field of PTSD in relation to uniformed personnel deployed to a UN peace operation.
- The study will result in 4 reports used to aggregate a document for decisionmaking in the UN general assembling.
Design
In this study two methodological approcaches were applied to investigate the prevalence, prevention, mitigation and current practises of PTSD related to UN peace operations. A scientific literature study, with books and reports relating to PTSD were identified from multiple scientific databases, was conducted. A survey containing questions on current practises, PTSD prevalence and PTSD claims was distributed to troops and police constributing countries in the UN.
