Amending the EU Seal Product Ban

Projekter: ProjektForskning

When the environmental non-governmental organisations (ENGOs) were targeting and stigmatizing Newfoundlanders in the 1970s-1980s during the anti-sealing movement, the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation had yet to secure formally recognized political and legal status. In light of the federal and provincial government recognition of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation and the establishment of its band council in 2011, this project will explore the role of sealing in Qalipu culture and traditional economic practices, and will examine the question, how might the Qalipu Mi'kmaq people advocate for the EU to recognize its status as First Nation peoples?
