The three-member DAHS Book Award Committee, was "very impressed" by "the depth and extent" of the research behind "Civil War Settlers: Scandinavians, Citizenship, and American Empire, 1848-1870", which provided a "nuanced" perspective on "the complex topic of Scandinavian immigrant assimilation and aspirations in the Civil War-era United States."
