Professor Media Studies, Dr.
My research area has been the reception/audience studies of digital media since I defended my doctoral dissertation on digital literature in 2001. My objects of study throughout the years have been hypertext, digital literature, digital art, computer games and transmedial worlds, lately with a special interest in Japanese popular culture products. Theoretically, I work from an aesthetic-reception oriented perspective, and have contributed to starting and developing the fields of digital literature, computer games and transmediality. Methodologically, I combine an aesthetic approach (close readings, semiotics) with qualitative methods to analyze reception, such as ethnography or interviews. I have been experimenting with arts-based research and creative writing in academic settings.
