I work across inter-disciplinary fields (Political Science, History, Sociology, Cultural and Linguistic Studies), utilising methodical-methodological perspectives and combining different historical-social sciences. In addition to political history, I am particularly interested in the history of mentality, perceptions, literature, society and culture. Across all my work, I undertake a consistent Europeanised writing of history.

My main research area are border and border regions in Europe. I work in a comparative way that allow me to analyse similarities and differences between Eastern, Central-Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern European borders and border regions.

I have also specialized in the complex issue of displaced persons and refugees during and after the Second World War within the framework of the Migration Studies.

I have done extensive research about the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, including an analysis of perceptions about and interpretations of this conflict among the neighbouring states.

I am particularly interested in the topic of “Nationalism and nation-building’. By studying changes from regional into national borders from the early modern period through to the twentieth century, I have traced and analysed the emergence, collapse and later on again strengthening of nation states in Europe.

In my research project – Multiple Crises within Europe, and between Europe and Eurasia – I am also implementing the aforementioned methodological approaches. As in my earlier research, I combine an extensive analysis of relevant literature with detailed research in archives and use of surveys.
