Teaching vision, Philosophy and Goals
My teaching vision can be summarized in the following statement:
Attending my courses should be interesting and stimulating for studying, such that it can be used in future work
How is it possible to achieve the vision? Over the years, I have found the following to be of importance:
• Course materials in form of textbooks and articles serves as an input. I give my interpretation of the text
• The interpretation establishes a “black box”, and within this box, it should be possible to generate a “blow”. If this happens, then the students will gain enthusiasm and motivation. This makes the course easier for them, and also more motivating for me as a lecturer
• I use a lot of notes and exercises that I made up from everyday situations. The students should be able to see the possibilities for applications that the methods in the courses provide
• My structure of the “black box” makes it possible for me to change the way that I lecture instantaneously. In this way I can make things easier for the students
Although I work at lot with various programs for calculus, I mainly use the black-, white- or smartboard when I lecture. I motivate the students to take notes. I this way they can feel that they get an outcome of attending my courses, and in addition, the students get a point of departure for the exercises. Student evaluations have shown that this is the best way to do things.
My way of teaching has developed over the years. I have become less dependent of the textbooks. Earlier my teaching was also very much inspired by the teachers of best courses I attended when I was a student myself. This is in a way old fashioned, but it served as a great inspiration especially in periods with many courses and many classes.
Constant evolution and new goals of teaching are also necessary for courses to be continuing inspiring for the lecturer as well as for the students. Although I have worked with classes of statistics for many years I still set new goals for each semester.
Teaching experience at SDU
In earlier positions at the University of Aarhus and at the Aarhus School of Business, I have given courses in: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics, International Integration and Trade Theory and Time Series Econometrics.
