Introduction

User involvement has shown to increase empowerment and autonomy, and to be beneficial for rehabilitation outcome. Moreover, information and communication technology (ICT) has the potential to be an alternative and supplement to existing stroke rehabilitation. However, many ICT solutions do not support a person-centred and coherent cross-sectional rehabilitation.

The aim of this study is to support empowerment in stroke survivors and their significant others within stroke rehabilitation and everyday life by development, test and evaluation of an ICT solution supporting coherent person-centred rehabilitation.

Design and method

Based on Medical Research Council’s guideline a qualitative research design with experience-based co-design is employed. Data are analyzed using Charmaz´ constructivist grounded theory approach.

Research phases

1. Phase: Research gathered in a scoping review and relevant stakeholders’ experiences regarding ICT integration in stroke rehabilitation was explored in individual and focus group interviews.

2. Phase: Developing an ICT solution in four workshops using experience-based co-design and testing the solution in 8 case studies.

3. Phase: A process evaluation will be conducted with emphasis on the experienced empowerment among the participating stroke survivors and their significant others and supplemented with physiotherapists’ and occupational therapists’ experiences optimizing the use of the developed ICT solution in stroke rehabilitation.
