I am a molecular biologist specialized in microalgae, unicellular photosynthetic microorganisms that have a global ecological impact and are central in mitigating the current climate crisis. My research focuses on the investigation of the genetics and biochemistry of ecologically and industrially relevant algal species, and on the exploration of their untapped potential to provide innovative and sustainable industrial solutions. Through functional genomics and synthetic biology, my work specifically aims at understanding, re-designing and engineering biotech-relevant traits in algal cells to develop novel strains tailored to industrial needs.
I obtained a M.Sc, B.Sc from the University of Bologna (Italy) and a PhD from Ghent University (Belgium). Prior to joining the SDU Department of Green Technology, I worked on algal molecular biotechnology and synthetic biology at the University of Technology Sydney (Australia) jointly with the CSIRO Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform (Australia).
