Finn Laursen, PhD and cand. scient. pol., held the Canada Research Chair in European Union (EU) Studies at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada, 2006-2013. He was a Professor in the university’s Department of Political Science and directed the EU Centre of Excellence (EUCE). Since 2007 he also holds an ad personam Jean Monnet Chair in EU Studies.

He received his university education at Aarhus University, Denmark (MA) and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA (PhD). He was a research student at the European University Institute in Florence, 1977-80 and a John Parker Compton Visiting Fellow at Princeton University, 1980-81. Teaching positions include being a lecturer at the London School of Economics (1985-88), Professor, European Institute of Public Administration, Maastricht, The Netherlands (1988-95), Professor and Director, South Jutland University Centre, Esbjerg, Denmark (1995-98), Foreign Professor, Tsukuba University, Japan (1998-99) and Professor of International Politics, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark (1999-2006), where he is now an Honorary Professor.

In recent years his research has focused upon European integration, especially the making and reforms of the EU’s constitutive and reform treaties as well as successive enlargements of the EU and the role played by the EU in the global system. He has also done comparative research on regional integration, including, NAFTA, MERCOSUR and ASEAN.

Finn Laursen has published extensively. He has authored and edited or co-edited about 25 books and published about 100 journal articles or book chapters. His articles have appeared in various journals including World Politics, Journal of Common Market Studies, International Review of Administrative Sciences, Cooperation and Conflict, Journal of Legislative Studies, and Europe en formation. His latest edited volumes are: Comparative Regional Integration: Theoretical Approaches (Ashgate, 2003), The Treaty of Nice: Actor Preferences, Bargaining and Institutional Choice (Martinus Nijhoff, 2006).The Rise and Fall of the Constitutional Treaty (Nijhoff, 2008), The EU in the Global Political Economy (PIE Peter Lang, 2009), The EU as a Foreign and Security Policy Actor (Republic of Letters Publishing, 2009), Comparative Regional Integration: Europe and Beyond (Ashgate, 2010), The EU and Federalism: Polities and Policies Compared (Ashgate, 2011), The Making of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty: the Role of the Member States (PIE Peter Lang, 2012), The Lisbon Treaty: Institutional Choices and Implementation (Ashgate, 2012), The EU, Security and Transatlantic Relations (P.I.E. Peter Lang, 2012), The EU and the Political Economy of Transatlantic Relations (P.I.E. Peter Lang, 2012), Designing the European Union: From Paris to Lisbon (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), The EU and the Eurozone Crisis: Policy Challenges and Strategic Choices (Ashgate 2013), EU Enlargement: Current Challenges and Strategic Choices (P.I.E. Peter Lang, 2013). He is currently writing a new edition of Historical Dictionary of the European Union for Scarecrow Press, a division of Rowman & Littlefield.
