Research Areas

Dorte Moeskær Larsen is an associate professor of mathematics education at the Center for STEM Education Research – FNUG, at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Southern Denmark. She has extensive expertise in mathematics education and STEM, particularly with a focus on promoting inquiry-based mathematics teaching grounded in curiosity and interdisciplinarity.

Dorte has a broad research profile within mathematics education, with a particular focus on the development and assessment of mathematical reasoning competencies, mathematics in STEM education, scenario-based didactics, teacher development, teaching materials, and the implementation of research results in didactics at both school and university levels.

She holds a PhD in mathematics education from the University of Southern Denmark, where she investigated innovative teaching methods and the cognitive processes involved in learning to reason mathematically in primary education. In addition, she has several years of hands-on teaching experience as a former primary and lower secondary school teacher, and has worked for a number of years as an associate professor in applied research in education and society at UCL.

As project leader of the LabSTEM project, Dorte has worked on integrating STEM education into the classroom through adaptive, interdisciplinary, and engaging teaching programmes. The initiative aimed to promote students’ technical skills, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities. She continues this work in her role as project leader of LabSTEM+, where the focus is on enhancing the quality of teaching in mathematics and science.

In addition to her research at FNUG, Dorte also applies her extensive knowledge in her role as head of the expert group for primary and lower secondary schools at the National Centre for the Development of Mathematics Education (NCUM), and as a member of the editorial board of the journal MONA – Mathematics and Science Education Didactics.
