The research article "Face masks considerably reduce COVID-19 cases in Germany" by Timo Mitze, Reinhold Kosfeld, Johannes Rode and Klaus Wälde has gained significant attention in the media. The article has been featured in media outlets such as Forbes, Frankfurter Allgemeine and New York Magazine.

This attention in the media led the authors to write an article in VoxEU titled "Unmasked! The effect of face masks on the spread of COVID-19", which found that the introduction of mandatory face masks slowed down the spread of COVID-19.

In particular, the research finds that "(...) 20 days after becoming mandatory, face masks have reduced the number of infections by around 45%".
