Beskrivelse af impact

Coorganizer with Arnstein Aaasve (Bocconi University) of a scientific workshop jointly organised by Population Europe, Bocconi University, and the University of Southern Denmark as part of the Policy Lab of the Horizon Europe project “Towards a Resilient Future of Europe”.

Demographic change is one of the megatrends of our time. Political, economic, and social decision-makers around the world are grappling with the consequences of the changing size and composition of populations. This raises important questions such as how we can better forecast and manage labour-force shortages, how we can ensure the sustainable funding of social security and pension systems, and how we can maintain public services (health, education etc.) in depopulating regions. Transdisciplinary knowledge exchange between stakeholders has been established at all levels of decision-making in recent years, particularly in the European Union. However, interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers in the fields of demography, political, behavioural and social sciences, and the humanities is much less developed. This is all the more surprising as it is clear that understanding the mechanisms of policies and normative change and how they may or may not affect future population trends, and conversely, the impact of population trends on basic cultural and political patterns, such as identity formation, democratic resilience and social cohesion, requires more in-depth interdisciplinary collaboration. The aim of the workshop is therefore to shed light on
•the most recent state-of-the-art debates at this intersection between the empirical social sciences and the humanities,
•how inter- and transdisciplinary approaches could be combined more effectively,
•how theory building and modelling might benefit from such a dialogue, and
•what we can learn from this exercise for policy evaluation and population forecasting.
By bringing together around 40 eminent scholars to discuss these issues and questions, we seek to develop an interdisciplinary programme on political and cultural demography.
