Beskrivelse

From the epic of Gilgamesh (4000 BC) to modern day authors J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, and George R.R. Martin, and audiovisual fictions such as Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Fallout, fantastic narratives compel us to imagine and rethink life and society. The aim of the course is to provide an in-depth and research based introduction to the fantastic genres with particular emphasis on their core philosophical questions, and to engage with key works and authors in literature, film, and television shows. The course uses two approaches: One is textual analysis, discussing select genres, authors, and media texts. The second is philosophy. Fantastic genres originate from thinking about and trying to find answers to questions posed by our lives, identities, mortality, evil, society, and social responsibility.
