Fra Hunger Games til Avengers: Age of Ultron: Fantastiske Kvinder i Moderne Film og TV

This course examines the roles of female protagonists (or near-protagonists) in contemporary fantastic film and TV. Focus is on film, however, relevant TV series can be included. The focus is on four types of fantastic women: the (young adult) sci-fi heroine (Hunger Games film series); the female super hero (e.g. Wonder Woman and Black Widow); fantasy (e.g. HBO series Game of Thrones); and the new Disney princess (Brave, Frozen).
Theory is fantastic theory (Todorov, Elgin, Ndanialis) and cognitive theories of fiction and of gender, drawing from literary studies (Brian Boyd), psychology (Bem) and biology (Zuk, Fausto-Sterling). The main questions are: What roles do women play in today’s fantastic genres; is fantasy changing from a male-author dominated genre into a gender-neutral genre (like e.g. crime fiction).
