This course is designed to make an introduction to composite materials, and to the manufacturing methods used to produce them.Key areas:
• Fibers, including carbon fiber, fiberglass, and aramid (Kevlar)
• Fiber configurations such as unidirectional and woven fabrics
• Matrix, including thermoplastic and thermoset types
• Mechanical behavior
• Design and tooling considerations
• Manufacturing methods, including hand lay-up, prepreg layup, vacuum infusion, pultrusion, and filament winding
• Curing methods such as room temperature, oven, and autoclave cures
• Quality and defects
