The purpose of this course is to gain an understanding of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) matters in world politics. The course seeks to familiarise you with AI as an analytical and empirical matter of world politics. The course starts by laying the theoretical and conceptual groundwork necessary for understanding AI as a technology, reviewing diverse theoretical approaches for studying technologies within and beyond the discipline of International Relations. The course then turns towards sketching the historical trajectory of AI before exploring four core themes: (1) governance, (2) global production chains and the international political economy, (3) ethics, and (4) AI in the military domain.
