The International Safety Management (ISM) Code has been mandatory for international shipping since 1998. The purpose described in the preamble is "to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention." Are the intentions of the ISM Code realized, and does the code represent a legal framework suitable for ensuring quality shipping in the future? This session will explore these questions, along with the impacts of ISM on maritime law today.
