The work presented is based on and motivated by the observation that the tasks of our universities seem to be ever more oriented towards serving the needs of the business world. The free press is sometimes referred to as the fourth power of state. I will argue that the universities hold a similar role in a modern democracy - a role that make them critically important and for which they merit being called the fifth power. Normative thesis: In a modern democratic society the purpose of the universities cannot be reduced to exclusively serving the needs of the business world. A critical residual task remains.
