Titel: Watching the watchmen: a statistical analysis of marking

Abstract
Verifying that taught modules are marked to a common standard is
important but doing so by simply comparing average module marks is too
simplistic because the composition of students in each module is different.
For example, a module taken by a group of students of above average ability
justifies a high average module mark. We suggest that the simple technique
called fixed effects regression can better identify if any one module’s
average mark is an outlier because it can control for the student composition
within each module. We describe how educational practitioners with a
modest statistical background can usefully implement fixed effects
regression on a dataset of student marks and how they can interpret the
results. In UK higher education, increases in student numbers and potential
threefold increases in student fees have increased the need for accountability
in the marking process and hence the need for such verification procedures.
