Abstract: Throughout history, whenever new technologies have emerged that changed our means of production and ability to communicate they have tended to transform society. The rapid technological development of the past century – in biotechnology, information technology, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence – holds the promise to do the same for our current, post-industrial world. How do we prepare for this? How can or should the scientific community engage? I’ll present and discuss an outline of a Manifesto for the societal transition we have recently entered. The Manifesto provides a way to comprehend and address the unfolding, complex changes, though a documented set of statements (“facts”) from five interacting areas: (A) The digital economy is different (B) Challenges and opportunities for citizens in cyberspace (C) Democracy and the middle-class under pressure (D) One world: no single nationstate can take care of their citizens alone (E) New narratives are needed BINC refers to a convergence of the bio-, information-, nano- and cognitive technologies. The Manifesto is a results of an ongoing international collaboration between scientists and engineers as well as people from the humanities and the arts.
