Roundtable: Intersections between Epic and Drama

This roundtable will bring together scholars of early modern epic and dramatic literature to share their thoughts on studying crossovers between epic and dramatic literature. In contrast to intergeneric links between drama and non-dramatic genres such as the Italian novella, love poetry, or chivalric and pastoral romance, the relation of drama to epic has often been overlooked. The panel will invite its participants to reflect on the reasons for this neglect and the merits of turning our attention to this generic intersection. Our topic is not the reception of Greek and Roman drama and epic but interactions between contemporary early modern texts. Participants will be asked to discuss questions that they think are relevant for future research. Participants will also briefly present small case studies that illustrate the variety of possible points of contact between the two genres. The panel will cover literature in various languages and from various regions, with a special focus on texts that cross national and linguistic borders.
