Beskrivelse

The concept of movement practices emphasizes embodied experiences and how these experiences are intertwined with cultural and social norms. The concept encourages us to view bodily movement as an ongoing process and as interconnected with various levels of movement–such as cultural changes, the dynamics of social groups and so on. Unlike the term physical activity, which carries an instrumental implication and typically measures individual achievements, movement practices recognizes that our moving bodies exist within, are influenced by, and engage with our broader social and cultural context. It is a promising concept for research aiming at recognizing actual practices and embodied experiences. But the concept also raises important questions: How can we investigate embodied experiences and movement practices, considering both their structural organization and cultural underpinnings? And how do we both grasp this complexity while also making clear the societal implications of investigating actual practices of movement?

Speakers have been invited to engage with these questions from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives – including phenomenology, medical anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and pedagogy.
