Understanding variation in demographic trajectories among species is an important aspect of conservation biology, biological demography and evolution. I will first outline some recent work looking at the variation in demographic trajectories in studies of the evolution of senescence. I highlight that many observed trajectories are not consistent with the "classical" evolutionary theories of senescence. I then go on to look at within-species variation in demographic trajectories which is likely to hamper evolutionary studies.
