Indo-Danish Collaboration

In 2010 two Danish and two Indian project investigators were awarded 2 million Euros from the Danish Strategic Research Council and the Indian Department of Biotechnology. The collaborative project, entitled "Musculoskeletal Stem Cells in Tissue Regeneration" is based on current collaborative efforts initiated following a joint Indo-Danish Workshop held at NCBS in Bangalore in the last week of February 2006. The groups involved in the collaboration are KMEB (Moustapha Kassem), inSTEM (Jyotsna Dhawan), OUH Clinical Pathology (Henrik Daa Schrøder), SCTIMST Tissue Engineering (Prabha D. Nair) as the main investigators with additonal partners Professor Jørgen Kjems (Nucleic Acid Function & Technology, Dk), Associate Professor Blagoy Balgoev (CeBi, Dk), Dr Amit Bandopadhyay (Indian Institute of Technology), Dr H.K.Varma (SCTIMST) and Dr Vrisha Madhuri (CMC Vellore).

The project will establish a close collaboration between leading Indian and Danish scientists in the area of stem cells. The researchers involved have complementary expertise and thus a synergistic collaboration is expected. The proposed project will generate results that can not be obtained by the individual laboratories and will lead to acquisition of novel knowledge and know-how by the participating partners. It is envisaged that the project will enhance interaction with the biotechnology industry in both countries which is a very important dimension taking into consideration the significance of the emerging biotechnology industry in both India and Denmark.

Using stem cells and the area of musculoskeletal research we expect to develop sustainable knowledge and advance scientific frontiers that are needed for initiation of clinical trials for tissue regeneration. This will strengthen clinical translational research in the area of stem cell therapies in both countries. The project is funded for 4 years for 2011 until 2014. http://www.fi.dk/publikationer/2011/det-strategiske-forskningsraads-aarsskrift-2010/aarsskrift-til-web.pdf
