With late medieval Castilian historiography as a test field, it is my aim to critically re-examine four crucial works that, from the realm of literature, have approached the relation between images and narrative, at times brilliantly and others with disputable arguments in light of the medieval theory and practice on images: Mimesis: Dargestellte Wirklichkeit in der abendländischen Literatur by Erich Auerbach (1946), Romanesque Signs: Early Medieval Narrative and Iconography, by Stephen G. Nichols (1983), A Rhetoric of the Scene: Dramatic Narrative in the Early Middle Ages by Joaquín Martínez Pizarro (1989) and History as a Visual Artin the Twelfth-Century Renaissance by Karl F. Morrison (1990).
