Distinguishing ‘fine’ from ‘sick’: The problem of endometriosis symptoms

Aktivitet: Foredrag og mundtlige bidragForedrag og præsentationer i privat eller offentlig virksomhed

Beskrivelse

Biomedical research has traditionally seen healthcare seeking as a matter of recognizing symptoms and seeking medical attention. However, figuring out what is worthy of medical attention is a complex social process, fraught with back-and-forth considerations. This presentation will discuss why the bodily experiences young people with endometriosis have, that is the early signs of the disease, are often not interpreted as symptoms. This includes discussing the social mechanisms around the most prevalent symptom, menstrual pain, as well as looking at the mismatch between common healthcare seeking strategies and endometriosis symptoms.
