Beskrivelse

This talk will be about the ways conversational partners go about to create opportunities for participation of persons with severe speech and physical disabilities (SSPI). According to both clinical experience and research, interaction involving persons with SSPI are heavily dependent on the support and facilitation by conversational partners. Conversation analytic research within the field of atypical interaction and AAC, our own studies and well others’, show that the construction of participation relies on the integrated use of multimodal ressources and methods, such as speech, prosody, gaze, body orientation, touch, and the handling of objects. These ressources and methods are organized in orientation to the timing of the participants contributions to the ongoing activity. In the talk, we will provide some theoretical and methodological background to the study of participation in atypical interaction and give examples from our own research within the field.
