    Beskrivelse

In recent years, “Design Culture” has been propagated not only as a study of object, but also as a research approach and as a discipline. A “design culture turn” has been claimed by leading Design Culture Studies researcher Guy Julier, e.g. in his book on The Culture of Design (2014).
Taking a starting point in the concept of Design Culture, I will discuss 1) what “culture” means in relation to design, 2) which disciplinary demarcations exist in the field of studying design with regard to some kind of cultural contextualization within the humanities and social sciences (e.g. in Design History, Cultural Studies, Design Studies and Design Cultural Studies) and 3) how these positions and the cultural approach to design can contribute to practice-oriented design research.
In this way, the intention of the talk is open for an open discussion of how different research strategies in design can cross-fertilize and what it means for design to be “cultural”.
