Beskrivelse

Automated facial recognition algorithms have become widely implemented as a way of ascertaining the identity of individuals. Although these algorithms involve the development of a kind of machinic gaze, the processes by which they ‘see’ and the kinds of knowledge they produce about us occur almost invisibly. This talk addresses automated facial recognition algorithms through a visual culture perspective. I approach some theoretical and conceptual reflections from the field onto the use of facial recognition technology in part, to make their processes and implications more visible. I will discuss a specific older method of algorithmic facial recognition called eigenface, which through my own research, I have contextualized through relating its forms of representation with an historical practice of the composite portrait. I will also present a few examples of contemporary artists who intervene with the technology of facial recognition algorithms and approach some issues that arise through its use, such as the politics of representation. Some of these artists appropriate algorithmic technology while others use different mediums to depict the cultural meaning and social implications behind its use. This discussion shifts the focus of enquiry towards the aesthetics of algorithmic processes in order to provide an entry point for critique and a possible reimagination of algorithmic knowledge production.
